Native American Artists: Lee Charley
Navajo artist Lee Charley has been described as “the Picasso of silverwork” and we love that! Having worked in jewelry all his life. Lee was born May 13, 1968 and raised in Thoreau, NM.Lee was taught the art of silversmithing by his mother, Nellie Charley, in 1984. Lee began his career by helping his mother after school and on weekends.
Nine years later Lee ventured out on his own and began making jewelry. Lee has now been doing his own designs, traditional stamp-work, setting stones and silversmithing for over 25 years. Often collaborates with his son, Matthew Charley. When you take a close look at his work, you see the perfection of every twist and turn in the silver. Each piece is unique, stunning, and incredibly detailed.
